5/10/2019

Motivation is one of the important factor that affects human behavior both professionally and personally. So, I thought that it would be good to know what derives people to achieve their best at work. There are several ways to motivate employees using extrinsic motivation but what drives them internally?
I wanted to learn from Furman’s experience what has worked for him for all those years. So, I asked him what are the internal motivating factors those help employees to bring positive desired outcome at work.
He talked about motivation at three levels- Company, team and individual and got into the factors those affect individual motivation. He believes that internal motivation for each person varies. He said, “ there are a lot of nuances and each individual has different drivers.”  All of us have a unique trigger that motivate him/her  to achieve the best.

He proved his point by giving several examples. He believes that a leader should understand and recognize the factors that motivate employees to help them utilize their full potential. To do this effectively a leader should have a purposeful and meaningful relationship with the employee to reach the next level.

During this session also, he emphasized again on importance of having trust in people and their potential and with right motivation trigger can bring surprising results. Furman further believes that a leader should be able to see talent in the employees  and leverage their strengths by coaching and mentoring. This improves the chance of their chances of advancement.

Having a long vision, clarity of purpose and passion to achieve the end goal is another motivating factor that impact people’s behavior
Furman is strong believer in happiness as the greatest motivations factor as it people to enhance their self-esteem . Many people are only motivated by  joy and satisfaction in what they’re working on, so as a leader ensure that they are happy at work.

Important take aways from this session-
  • Know your team- Talk to each one of them. Know what motivates them? What are they passionate about and then figure out how you can motivate them.
  • Build trust with your team and enable them to speak to you clearly and share ideas and thought.
